Learn 11ty, A11y and Alpine

Welcome to this beginner level series on Alpine JS! 👋🏞

Alpine JS is a rugged, minimal framework for composing JavaScript behaviour in your markup. It brings declarative, reactive, data-driven nature of libraries like React or Vue to your HTML templates.

In this series, you will learn about Alpine's handy **directives**. You'll discover how to define a component scope with `x-data`, run code on mount with `x-init`, attach event listeners with `x-on`, display data with `x-text`, decide wether or not to show an element with `x-show`, iterate through data with `x-for`, retrieve a DOM element with `x-ref`, learn how to achieve _two-way data binding_ with `x-model`, and much more.

You'll also learn how **"modifiers"** can be applied and chained to directives to provide additional functionality: control the animation transition of entering and leaving DOM elements, debounce an event listener, etc.

We'll also touch on what Alpine calls **"magic properties"**, which give you access to native browser events (`$event`), reference to DOM elements (`$refs`), and more.

You'll gradually discover Alpine's API and syntax, from building simple tabs to a mini app that fetches a dog picture based on a "breed" search field. 🐶

- Web audio APIs include support for features that aren't available by default in the native HTML audio element.
- The operating system includes basic controls
- Custom controls must be accessible with a keyboard, and make sense to a screen reader
- Don't hide the built-in controls until you know that your custom controls are working
- Listening to what VoiceOver reads should inform the a11y information you include
    - VoiceOver says "Elapsed Time" on its own, so we wouldn't want to write it in our code.
- `loadedmetadata` should have the duration to avoid glitches from new audio not being loaded.
- Elements should be labeled with a unique `id`

Create an Accessible Audio Player with the HTML Media Element and React

Learn how to make flexible customized Twitch Scenes using the static site generator Eleventy (11ty), CSS, and ComfyJS.

Throughout this course, you'll create scenes for preshow, host, and main desktop display streaming purposes. Using ComfyJS, we'll add embedded chat and be able to create responses to chat commands. Finally, we'll see how to actually setup the scenes in OBS to prepare to use them for your stream.

Bonus: you'll learn a bit more about CSS grid layout, and also the "cicada principle" to be able to show the commands randomly across the scene!

Eleventy was created to be a JavaScript alternative to Jekyll. It’s zero-config by default but has flexible configuration options. Eleventy works with your project’s existing directory structure.

Eleventy uses independent template engines. We don’t want to hold your content hostage. If you decide to use something else later, having your content decoupled in this way will make migration easier.

Web accessibility (also referred to as a11y) is the design and creation of websites that can be used by everyone. Accessibility support is necessary to allow assistive technology to interpret web pages.

React fully supports building accessible websites, often by using standard HTML techniques.

Erin Doyle is an expert in creating accessible React applications and has developed a course that will give you a concrete process for auditing react apps for accessibility. In this course, you will go through different tools and libraries to audit components in a React app.

Auditing React Apps for Accessibility 

In this lesson, we define a "count" state value with the `x-data` directive provided by Alpine JS. This defines a new scoped component, which can have access to this state.

We then display the "count" value in our HTML with the `x-text` directive, which updates an element's `innerText` value.

We also hook up buttons with click event listeners with `x-on:click`, which allows us to modify the count value as desired.

In this lesson, we create a set of tabs with Alpine JS, where only the content of the currently active tab is visible. To do this, we define an `activeTab` state value with `x-data. We then wire up our buttons to change the value of `activeTab` on click, and use `x-show` to determine if the tab content should be visible or not, based on the value of `activeTab`.

We also take control of the `class` attribute with `x-bind`, and we conditionally output an "active" class based on, you guessed it, the value of `activeTab`.

In this lesson, we move the component definition to a function, defined in a script tag in the HTML document.

We then iterate through an Array of Objects with the `x-for` directive in Alpine JS. We use a `<template>` tag to wrap the HTML element we want to repeat for each item, and put the `x-for` directive on that template tag.

We also define a "computed" property by adding a method on our function, which checks if a given ID matched the currently active tab id. This computed property allows us to determine wether or not to apply the "active" classname to our tab buttons.

In this lesson, we smoothen the transitions between tabs by applying a `transition` modifier to our `x-show` directive.

We see how we can ignore the leaving elements, and focus the animation on the entering elements. We tweak the transition duration and origin by chaining additional modifiers to our `x-show` directive.

In this lesson, we see how the `x-model` directive makes achieving "two-way data binding" effortless in Alpine JS.

We see what it would take to recreate the same functionality with an `x-bind` directive for the input value, as well as an `@input` event listener which, thanks to an access to the browser's native events via the `$event` magic property, sets the state value to `$event.target.value`.

In this lesson, we learn how to retrieve a DOM element via the `x-ref` directive in Alpine JS, which gives us a reference to the element it is applied on. In our case, an input field.

We can then use the `$refs` object, and reach for the ref we need to target.

This allows us to trigger the focus state of the input field, with the `.focus()` method.

In this lesson, we learn how the `x-init` directive in Alpine JS lets us run a JavaScript expression once the component has initiated.

We see the nuances that allow us to trigger that code before Alpine performs initial DOM updates, or after these updates have been made.

In this lesson, we build a little app that fetches dog photos from the dog.ceo API, based on a "breed" search field. We want the API call to happen again when the search value changes, and to do so we use the `$watch` property from Alpine JS, which lets us define what state property we want to watch, and what callback function to run when a change happens.

We also use the `debounce` modifier on the `x-model` property to avoid firing an API call on each keystroke.

Series Intro - Beginner Level Alpine JS

Our Twitch Scenes will use the static site generator Eleventy (11ty) to leverage templating features for creating the scenes. This lesson covers the base project which is available in the project repo under `/lessons/00-base`.

This lesson includes templating for the stream details and initial styling of the details section within the scene layout. The primary templating language in use is [Nunjucks](https://mozilla.github.io/nunjucks/templating.html).

Building a component library is a great way to gain efficiencies in creating accessible React apps and Storybook is a great tool for doing that. Using the accessibility add-on to Storybook you can test your components in isolation for accessibility issues before composing them into an application.

If you can write and test each of these components initially with accessibility in mind then you now have:

* A library of reusable components with accessibility baked in.
* You won’t need to solve the same problems over and over again.

We can add accessibility testing to our `jest` unit tests with `jest-axe` which gives us:

* An easy way to automate accessibility auditing.
* The flexibility to audit at any level of our code, as low as an element and as high as a component representing an entire page of our app.
* A safety net for any accessibility regressions.

Here we'll see how to use `jest-axe` with `ReactDOM` to render components for `jest-axe` to audit for accessibility.

“a11y” stands for “accessibility.” It is a numeronym, with 11 representing the count of letters between the letter a and the letter y.

Accessibility is broken down into 4 categories of disability: visual, cognitive, auditory, motor. 

Regardless of the category of disability, accessibilities aim in web development is to make applications and websites usable for everyone.

To automate running Lighthouse audits on our application we can add the use of the Lighthouse CI tool to our Continuous Integration suite using GitHub Actions.  By making use of the Lighthouse CI GitHub App we can add to the checks in every Pull Request a report with the score from the audit run on each URL we configure for Lighthouse to audit.

Automate Lighthouse Audits with GitHub Actions

JavaScript® (often shortened to JS) is a lightweight, interpreted, object-oriented language with first-class functions, most known as the scripting language for Web pages, but used in many non-browser environments as well such as node.js or Apache CouchDB. It is a prototype-based, multi-paradigm scripting language that is dynamic, and supports object-oriented, imperative, and functional programming styles.

You’ve probably heard of Lighthouse before as it comes bundled with Chrome DevTools for performing a number of audits on things such as performance, SEO, best practices as well as accessibility. 

We can also use Lighthouse locally on our machines to test our application's rendered pages for accessibility issues before committing changes by using the Lighthouse CI CLI.

We can leverage GitHub Actions to automate the running of all of our accessibility auditing tools as part of a Continuous Integration (CI) workflow. 

Auditing tools will only catch a percentage of potential accessibility issues, it is no replacement for manual testing.  But being able to automate the auditing will add efficiencies to our testing and provide an early warning system that can be run much more frequently than it’s practical to perform manual testing.  Additionally, we can use our CI suite as a safety net to prevent code changes that break accessibility from being able to be merged.

Automate Accessibility Audits with GitHub Actions

To audit our app for accessibility issues at runtime we can use Cypress to run our application in a browser environment and then with the aid of the axe-core `cypress-axe` library we can analyze the current page for any accessibility issues.

To audit our app for accessibility issues at runtime we can use Selenium WebDriver to run our application in a browser environment and then with the aid of the aXe-core `webdriverjs` library we can analyze the current page for any accessibility issues.
