Eleventy was created to be a JavaScript alternative to Jekyll. It’s zero-config by default but has flexible configuration options. Eleventy works with your project’s existing directory structure.

Eleventy uses independent template engines. We don’t want to hold your content hostage. If you decide to use something else later, having your content decoupled in this way will make migration easier.

In this series we will take a look at Gulp. Gulp is a task runner. It is the commander of our army of helper robots that take critical, yet totally mundane, tasks and perform them hundreds of times per day so we don't have to. We use `yarn redwood generate page` (`yarn rw` for short) in this lesson to generate an `IndexPage` component. 

The first argument to `yarn rw generate page` is the name of the page you are generating. The second argument is the path you want the page to show up on. So `yarn rw generate page index /` will generate an `IndexPage` component and insert a route entry in our `web/src/Routes.js` file.

We learn that redwood import `React` for you so you don't have to import it manually when you are creating a component.

Generate a Page Using the Redwood CLI

In this lesson, we are going over how to generate a `RedwoodJS` project.

We can create a `RedwoodJS` project with `yarn create redwood-app ./my-redwood-project`.

`yarn` will generate the `RedwoodJS` app in the file folder you specified without installing any globals.

To run the `RedwoodJS` app, we use `yarn redwood dev`. This runs the Redwood client as well as the `GraphQL` backend.

Generate a Redwood Project

RedwoodJS provides a `Link` component that we can use to navigate around our app. We can provide a `to` prop with the path that we want to navigate to.

RedwoodJS takes this a step further and provides a `routes` object from `@redwoodjs/router`. This object is aware of all the routes defined in `web/Routes.js`. This allows us to use the methods on this object rather than referencing the our routes with a string literal. We can then change the route path without having to change all of the references to that route all over our app.

RedwoodJS gives us a cli command to generate layouts.

`yarn redwood generate layout main`

This will generate a `MainLayout` component in `src/layouts/MainLayout/`. We can use this layout component to define any headers or footers we want to share across multiple pages.

Begining from a brand new project, learn how to install Eleventy (11ty), and add `develop` and `build` scripts. Next, define a custom configuration to set preferred input and output directories. Then create a home page file and your first layout while learning how 11ty handles mixing templating languages.

Learn how to add Sass to an Eleventy (11ty) project including directing 11ty to re-compile when Sass changes are made. This step involves adding two new functions to the `.eleventy.js` configuration: `addWatchTarget()` and `addPassthroughCopy()`. Then, define the link to the compiled CSS file within an 11ty layout.

Create a blog directory with posts for your Eleventy (11ty) project, and learn how to define the posts as an 11ty collection using `tags`. Then make a blog index page and write a `for` loop with Nunjucks to output a list of each post linked to the post page.

Filters in Eleventy (11ty) are a way to mutate data including string variables or arrays such as collections. Learn to create a filter for use on a collection which will select a random item from the collection.

Apply a Filter to an Eleventy (11ty) Collection

Eleventy (11ty) is able to run any JavaScript or Node functions at build time. This makes it possible to source external data such as from a headless CMS or other API. Learn how to generate pages from data pulled from a mock CMS using the 11ty `pagination` method and designate the data as an 11ty collection. You'll also learn how to define variables for the page using `eleventyComputed`, and then write a `for` loop to output a link to each page.

In this lesson, we are going to learn how to create a config file to store common values so that we can reuse them multiple times in our `gulpfile.js`. As our `gulpfile.js` grows in complexity, we may find that we are introducing complex and multiple file path references. By creating a `gulp.config.js` file, we can simplify these references and make it easier to refactor and extend in the future.
