John Lindquist here with the second issue of AI Dev Essentials! It's been another busy week in the AI tooling world. The biggest splash was probably GPT-4.1 hitting the streets, but there's plenty more action around MCP, Vercel's v0, Google's developer tools, and interesting community discussions. I've spent some time with GPT-4.1 already (specifically in Cursor), and while it shows promise, it didn't quite convince me to switch from Gemini 2.5 Pro yet. It stumbled on a few basic requests where Gemini usually shines on the first attempt.

Cursor is offering it free for now to let users get a feel for it, though they don't recommend it as a default just yet. Curious to hear initial impressions from folks testing it out for coding tasks.

* **Grok 3 in Cursor:** Following other model additions, [Cursor also enabled Grok 3 models](https://x.com/amanrsanger/status/1910434915419906141), with the mini version available for free users. Aman Sanger noted it seems to "think upfront more than other models."

* **Community Hack: Llama 4.0 via Groq in Cursor:** Levi Dan shared a [detailed (and slightly hacky) guide](https://x.com/lxvi_brg/status/1908865544721154455) on how to wire up Groq's fast Llama 4.0 API into Cursor by using the OpenAI API key slot and intercepting requests. A clever workaround for the adventurous!

Lots of movement across different platforms and tools this week:

* **Vercel Ecosystem:**

  * Guillermo Rauch teased [v0 coming to VS Code](https://x.com/rauchg/status/1911524154458984515), hinting at tighter integration for the UI generation tool.

  * v0 also [added AI integrations](https://x.com/v0/status/1911912183149256943) with models from xai (Grok), FAL, Groq, and DeepInfra, including automatic API key setup and pay-as-you-go billing via Vercel Marketplace. They're offering a $10 credit for the Grok free tier.

  * Vercel shared insights on the [grep.app migration from CRA to Next.js](http://grep.app/), showcasing performance improvements. ([Source](https://x.com/rauchg/status/1911920410020757881)) I'm personally excited about this one – I rely heavily on examples when working with AI, and for me, a good example is often worth ten prompts. Tools like `grep.app` that make code discovery easier are invaluable.

* **Google's Growing Stack:**

  * Project IDX has officially become [Firebase Studio](https://x.com/_davideast/status/1909990728593453455), positioning itself as a cloud-based, agentic dev environment for full-stack AI apps, deeply integrated with Firebase. I've tried spinning up a few sites with it, and the speed is impressive. However, for more complex tasks like designing from images or intricate interactions, I still find myself leaning towards v0 for now.

  * Google quietly released the [Agent Development Kit (ADK)](https://x.com/omarsar0/status/1910004370864742757), a Python library (`pip install google-adk`) for building multi-agent systems with features like state management, tool usage, and orchestration. I haven't had a chance to dive into this yet, but it's right at the top of my list. Building robust agent systems is a huge area of interest, so this is probably the announcement I'm most excited about exploring this week.

  * Ramón Medrano Llamas shared his experience [moving back to VS Code from Cursor](https://x.com/rmedranollamas/status/1909516749612999149), highlighting the effectiveness of GitHub Copilot combined with the Gemini Code Assist extension (using Gemini 2.5 Pro in Agent Mode). I gave the Gemini Code Assist extension a try myself, but as someone deeply embedded in the Cursor workflow with established keyboard shortcuts and patterns, I struggled to find a flow I liked and didn't stick with it for long. It's interesting to see different perspectives, though!

  * AI features are rolling out more broadly in [Chrome](https://x.com/iam_chonchol/status/1909942954686636224), including text grabbing from YouTube videos and Google Lens integration.

* **Cloudflare Corner:**

  * Big news for edge compute: [Cloudflare Containers are coming to Open Beta in June](https://x.com/CherryJimbo/status/1910682562499850405), enabling running containerized apps (Next.js, Go, PHP confirmed) directly on the edge. This is huge news, in my opinion. Think about all the WordPress sites and other applications that rely on containerization. Opening this up on the edge unlocks incredible possibilities, including for AI applications. I'm super hyped to see what people build with this come June.

## Llama 4 & Nemotron-Ultra Released

Meta's Llama 4 models began rolling out, with initial reports of variable quality across implementations. Nvidia subsequently released **Llama-Nemotron-Ultra** (253B parameters), derived from Llama-405B via pruning and reasoning-focused post-training. **Summary:** More powerful open models are available. Llama 4's initial rollout highlights the importance of stable implementations. Nemotron-Ultra adds a high-end specialized option.

OpenRouter provides early access to "Quasar Alpha," a model with limited public details but notable claims: 1M token context, benchmarks reportedly surpassing Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and >4x faster speeds. The originating lab remains anonymous; speculation includes GPT-5, Claude 4, or Gemini 3.

Jest is a fast and safe testing framework with a focus on simplicity.

We can leverage GitHub Actions to automate the running of all of our accessibility auditing tools as part of a Continuous Integration (CI) workflow. 

Auditing tools will only catch a percentage of potential accessibility issues, it is no replacement for manual testing.  But being able to automate the auditing will add efficiencies to our testing and provide an early warning system that can be run much more frequently than it’s practical to perform manual testing.  Additionally, we can use our CI suite as a safety net to prevent code changes that break accessibility from being able to be merged.

The React Testing Library is a very light-weight solution for testing React components. It provides light utility functions on top of react-dom and react-dom/test-utils, in a way that encourages better testing practices.

Render Components with ReactDOM to Write Tests with Jest and jest-axe

Best practices for building & testing redux applications have changed dramatically over time. This course aims to be a comprehensive yet understandable resource for those seeking to improve the testing of their redux applications.

This course is broken up into three parts.

The intro is look at how to add jest to an existing react redux application that was built on top of [vite](https://vitejs.dev/). We cover basic functionality like [watch mode](https://jestjs.io/docs/cli#--watch) and generating and using [code coverage](https://jestjs.io/docs/cli#--coverageboolean) to inform our testing strategy.

The first section covers the specifics of unit testing the redux code in our application. We'll go over how to test reducers, selectors and thunks. As part of this we'll touch on mocking APIs and using [Redux Mock Store](https://github.com/reduxjs/redux-mock-store) as well as running actions through our applications' actual reducers to broaden our test coverage.

Finally we'll look at how we can test our redux connected react components using the various utilities that come with the [React Testing Library](https://testing-library.com/docs/react-testing-library/intro/). We'll cover simulating various kinds of user input with the [user-event module](https://testing-library.com/docs/ecosystem-user-event), populating our redux store with test data, using [jest spy](https://jestjs.io/docs/jest-object#jestspyonobject-methodname), how to wait for asynchronous tasks to complete, and several approaches for finding & asserting that visual elements exist on the page.

Intermission Pep Talk - Testing Redux Applications

The [reselect module](https://github.com/reduxjs/reselect) popularized a pattern of memoized redux selectors. Now that pattern is baked into Redux Toolkit with its [createSelector](https://redux-toolkit.js.org/api/createSelector) method, which is used by the `getMemoizedNumItems` selector we're testing here.

Any selectors created with `createSelector` come with these two additional methods `recomputations()` and `resetRecomputations()`. These methods keep track of how many teams your data was recomputed and are essential for testing these selectors.

The createSelector method first takes any number of "input selectors" which gather data from your redux store and then for its final arguments takes an additional selector which has for its inputs the result of those input selectors.

The memoization is broken if either the initial state is unchanged OR if the any of the  results of the input selectors are unchanged. It uses `===` equality and not any sort of nested equality checking so `state` and `{ ...state }` would not be considered the same and always would recompute. On the flip side passing in `state` and then running `state.count++` would not trigger a recompute automatically, because the `state` object reference has not changed and `===` would pass. It definitely tripped me up a few times, so keep an eye out for issues with this.




Unit Testing a Memoized Redux Selector Built with Reselect/RTK

Redux is a predictable state container for JavaScript apps.
It helps you write applications that behave consistently, run in different environments (client, server, and native), and are easy to test.

There are several ways to mock APIs for our tests.

Here we're using [jest.mock](https://jestjs.io/docs/es6-class-mocks#calling-jestmock-with-the-module-factory-parameter) with the module factory parameter to a new mocked module to replace our original. This helps us avoid problems like servers taking a long time and node.js not having fetch built-in.

When using mocks this way it's important to note that this mocked module is only going to show up for the tests executed in this file. Other test suites will continue to receive the original implementation of app/api. 

Other approaches to mock APIs include mocking out `window.fetch` or using [Mock Service Worker](https://mswjs.io/docs/getting-started/integrate/node) to provide a more robust API implementation. However, the approach we took here makes sense for our use case. We have a simple API surface, it lives in a single file, we never call `fetch` directly and we don't need a lot of bells and whistles (like responding to different routes or query parameters). So for that reason this approach and the [spyOn](https://jestjs.io/docs/jest-object#jestspyonobject-methodname) approach used in some of the later lessons actually works really well.

If you're using [Apollo](https://www.apollographql.com/) or [ReactQuery](https://react-query.tanstack.com/) or [SWR](https://swr.vercel.app/) to handle your data, then you almost certainly should use [Mock Service Worker](https://mswjs.io/docs/getting-started/integrate/node) instead of the jest.mock approach.

Code coverage is an important part of any test setup. One of the jest framework's innovations is built-in test coverage support. In this lesson I demonstrate using the [collectCoverageFrom](https://jestjs.io/docs/configuration#collectcoveragefrom-array) configuration option to improve jest's coverage support for TypeScript files and then demonstrate using `npx jest --coverage` to run code coverage as well as `npm test -- --coverage`, which does the same thing.

At the end I briefly mention the [collectCoverage](https://jestjs.io/docs/configuration#collectcoverage-boolean) flag which seems like you'd want to always just have on, but in practice is annoying. That's because coverage takes several extra to process and I rarely need my code coverage run, so it just makes the testing feedback loop a lot slower. For a build-only config it might make sense to leave on.

Configuring Code Coverage for TypeScript Files in Jest

Jest has a [watch mode](https://jestjs.io/docs/cli) that can really speed up test development. It will automatically run your tests as you save your test files. And it has a built-in pattern option to allow you to only focus on tests for a particular file. This approach works well in combination with [test.todo](https://jestjs.io/blog/2019/01/25/jest-24-refreshing-polished-typescript-friendly#testtodo) where you can stub out a number of tests and then code on them until they all pass.

Most of what is being done in these tests we've already seen before and it's important to note that I'm doing only the most basic of testing here. For each of these actions it wouldn't be uncommon in production to have 3-6 tests instead of just one.

It's important to note that `it` and `test` are aliases of one another so `it.todo` and `test.todo` both work seamlessly and are just a matter of preference. *Usually* when I'm doing unit testing I'll stick with `describe` and `it`, which commonly go together and I use `test` without `describe` when I'm testing react components with [React Testing Library](https://testing-library.com/docs/react-testing-library/intro).

Vimium's Vomnibar is a "command palette"-like search tool for your open tabs, browser history, and bookmarks. We can search through and jump to any tab open across browser windows. We can also do a generalized search with results that also include browser history and bookmarks which can either be opened in the current tab or a new tab. If you're anything like me, you open tons of tabs and visit hundreds of webpages over the course of a week. The vomnibar puts all of that at your fingertips.

Vimium's Vomnibar is a "command palette"-like search tool for your open tabs, browser history, and bookmarks.

Another aspect of Vimium's configurability is customizable key mappings. We can add new mappings and override existing ones. If there is a certain Vimium feature you want to make easier to trigger, adjust the key mapping to suit your needs.

Many aspects of Vimium can be configured in order to bend the tool to your specific needs and use cases. We look at how to configure what sites turn off Vimium, the default search engine, link hint characters, and other basic settings. Many aspects of Vimium can be configured in order to bend the tool to your specific needs and use cases.

Vimium's "marks" feature lets you mark positions in the current tab and across tabs. These are positional markers that you can jump back to. For instance, as you browse a huge page of documentation or a massive forum discussion, you can leave a series of "dog ears" to sections or conversations that you'll later want to revisit. Each tab supports its own set of lower-case letter marks. Upper-case letter marks are shared across tabs allowing you to seamlessly move between a specific set of tabs regardless of how they are arranged.
