Learn Discord, Mdx and Reactfire

MDX is an authorable format that lets you seamlessly use JSX in your markdown documents. You can import components, like interactive charts or notifications, and export metadata. This makes writing long-form content with components a blast.



We will combine our knowledge of Dynamic routing to pass a dynamic parameter to a function that will query a single post from our Sanity CMS. When we fetch our blog post data this is a great place to do some processing of the content that we get back. If you didn't process your blog post markdown, it would come back as a string which doesn't look too great on the page.

To make our markdown pretty we will install and use the `MDSvex` library to use it's compile function and render our markdown.
  
We'll see that `MDSvex` gives us a Promise from `compile` because it's an async function so we'll use the Svelte `await` block to conditionally show the post body when it is ready, otherwise we'll show a loading state.

We can use the Discord API to build bots, integrations, and extensions for the platform.

The final step we need to take is to deploy our Discord bot to production. We'll be using using GitHub and Railway.app. 

[Railway.app](https://railway.app/) is a deployment platform that allows us to deploy our bot to the cloud. They give you $5 or 500 hours of free usage per month, which probably won't last you the full month, but it's a great way to get started.

Disabling buttons can be useful in Discord servers to prevent users from clicking on buttons that are no longer relevant. By disabling a button, you can inform users why the button is no longer clickable and avoid confusion or frustration.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a button that will disable itself when a submissions for a book-club have closed.

Now, let's learn how to add roles to users in a Discord server using a Discord.js collector.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a collector to gather users who click on a specific button, filter out users who do not have a certain role, and add a specific role to the users who meet the filter criteria.

Let's now learn how to create dynamic channels and roles with our Discord bot.

We want to be able to create new roles and channels for the book clubs and their attendants that we create in our server.

We'll be using methods from the `interaction` object to create the role and channel. And, we'll make sure to create both the role and channel each with the correct permissions.

In this lesson, you will learn how to create custom buttons in Discord.js using `ActionRowBuilder` and `ButtonBuilder`. You will also learn how to style and add text to the button using `ButtonStyle` and the `setEmoji` method.

We'll need to make these buttons for our book-club message to give users the ability to let us know that they want to be a part of the club. 

`ActionRowBuilder` and `ButtonBuilder` are important, here's what they do:

`ActionRowBuilder` is used to create a row of buttons or other action components in a Discord message. This class provides methods for adding buttons, text, and other components to the row, as well as methods for formatting the row.

`ButtonBuilder` is used to create individual buttons within the `ActionRowBuilder`. This class provides methods for setting the text, emoji, style, and other properties of the button.

By using them both, we are able to create a row of buttons exactly how we want them to look!

In this lesson, you will be learning how to display relative time in a Discord embedded message using the Unix timestamp. 

We'll be adding a countdown timer to an embedded message to show the time remaining until submissions to a book-club close.

By the end of this lesson, you will have the ability to convert hours into seconds, add it to the current time in the Unix timestamp, and create a variable to store the wait time in seconds to display the short date time and relative time in Discord.

Let's convert our Discord bot to respond with embedded messages.

Embedded messages in Discord are a great way to make your bot's responses look a lot more visually appealing!

We'll create a new command called `/bookclub` that will take in a book title, an author, and the number of hours until the submission deadline from the user. Then, it will `reply` with an object that Discord will automatically convert into an embedded message.

Now that our files are set up, we can now write our first Discord.js slash command.

By create custom commands, we extend the functionality of our Discord bot and can make it much more fun and interesting. 

We'll start by creating a new file in the commands folder, importing the slash command builder, and defining the data and execute sections of the command. We'll then register the command and test it in the Discord application.

In this lesson, you will be setting up the necessary files for your first Discord.js slash command. The goal of this lesson is to give you a solid foundation to build upon as you create your own custom commands for Discord.

We will be importing and using `fs` and `path` to read from the command and events directories, using `Collection` from Discord to store and retrieve your commands, and creating the `Client` using the `GatewayIntentBits. 

Also, we are going to deploy your commands and set up events to execute them properly once they're written.

All of the different topics I cover in this course will be a guide for you to use each of these concepts individually so I highly encourage you to take what you learn to build something new and tell me what you build!

I'll go over how to create a simple chat bot then go into much more detail on how to create slash commands. There is a break on lesson 5 where I'll go over some files that I've copy over from the Discord.js guide. There will be a template you can clone if you don't want to copy the files over yourself but I'll be running through each of them individually so you can understand what's going on.

By leveraging the [dependency graph](https://nx.dev/l/r/structure/dependency-graph), [Nx](https://nx.dev) is able to understand which parts in the monorepo changed and thus trigger actions on those nodes, such as building an app, running tests or linting. This already works out of the box. However, with our portfolio application, all of our markdown articles reside in the root-level `_articles` folder. Those are not captured by the Nx dependency graph and thus Nx would not correctly detect a change to our Next.js site application whenever we change or add a new markdown article.

One cool aspect of Next.js is its [fast refresh](https://nextjs.org/docs/basic-features/fast-refresh) support. Whenever you change some Next.js component it automatically refreshes the page without hard reloading everything. However, you might notice that whenever we change something within our MDX markdown files, fast refresh is not capturing that, hence we need to manually refresh the browser window.

Add Fast Refresh Support to our MDX Files with Nx Support for Custom Next.js Servers

Next.js is a minimalistic framework for server-rendered React applications.

Next.js is all about creating performant web applications. However, the more React components we pull into our MDX via `next-mdx-remote`, the heavier our JavaScript becomes which drains our site's performance. Also, while we might have quite a few React components to be included in our Markdown rendered content, we might not always use all of them in our articles.

In this lesson, we learn how to leverage Next.js dynamic imports to just pull the minimum necessary components into our final JavaScript bundle. Also, we look into why we might want to do deep imports into our Nx library setup to decrease the size of the bundle even more.

Dynamically Loading React Components with next-mdx-remote and Next.js Dynamic imports

The markdown rendering includes a lot of native HTML tags as well of course. Assume for instance we want to change the behavior of links within our rendered document. We can definitely create a custom component and include that in our MDX document, but we’d rather not want to have to use a specific `<Link>` component and rather be able to keep the native way of rendering links in Markdown, that is `[some link](https://juri.dev)`.

Turns out that with `next-mdx-remote` we are able to automatically replace all rendered `<a>` tags (or really any other tag we want) with a React Component.

Use React Components for Native HTML Tags with MDX and Next.js

When rendering our markdown we might want to enrich the experience with some dynamic content. Many static site generators allow to include dynamic content placeholders for like embedding a Youtube video, generating table of contents, code blocks with interactive functionality and more. One way to achieve this in the React ecosystem is by using MDX. MDX is similar to JSX but for Markdown content, and allows us to directly embed React components within it. This gives an enourmous flexibility to what we can display within a page.

I often find myself wondering how to use certain APIs in certain situations, and I have a couple of keywords that I try and search up on Google. And what you can really do in this situation is turn to GitHub and see how other people have actually used this code on public projects. The GitHub CLI enables us to run searches like this, and we can take the results and work on them programmatically. And inside of Cursor with their Composer AI agent, we can search for the files we want, and we can tell the agent to download them and then work on them and inspect them and teach us how those things work together.

Implement virtual scrolling to handle large datasets in an HTML table. Start with a basic table that renders 10,000 rows of data. The browser can struggle with this amount of DOM nodes to render at one time, especially on low end devices.

The most difficult tasks will require the strongest AI models. And those models simply aren't available as AI agents inside of your tooling. So the best workflows are to drag and drop the files you need to be changed and analyzed inside of a reasoning model such as OpenAI's O1 Pro, then letting it create a giant plan for your dumber AI agents to work on. The key here is that instead of just copying and pasting the entire plan into Cursors Composer or your AI agent, it's to create a file inside of your project and ask your agent to tackle the plan one step at a time. This allows you ample opportunity between each step to test and verify the micro steps along the way. Otherwise, as I've experienced many times, a session can go way off track and you burn a lot of time and burn a lot of AI requests Cursors Composer and it starts churning through a plan Cursors Composer and making lots of unwanted changes. Cursors Composer and it's to guide an AI agent to hold its hand along the way, especially through the most complex tasks. Planning AI Agent Sessions with Reasoning Models

AI agents will inevitably make mistakes—it's just a matter of when. A key tool in your toolbox, once they do make mistakes after working on a problem for a while, is to use **git diff** to capture all of the changes they've made. 

Once you have those changes in a text file, you have a portable document that you can test against other AI models. This allows you to move the problem into smarter reasoning models with smaller context windows, helping you isolate and focus on the issue at hand.

**git diff** has been invaluable when working with AI agents because they'll often make many good changes but also slip in one tiny error. Finding that one small mistake is **git diff**’s superpower.

AI agents are notorious for getting tasks done, but also taking some shortcuts in TypeScript, and falling back to using things like Any, which you might not want in your codebase. This creates a scenario when it's done all of the work, you've tested and verified everything, but it's left you with many things untyped. So in this situation, when you run git commit, you can set up a commit hook to expose all of the linting, expose all of the TypeScript errors. And then you just let the AI agent run that commit hook and it can find all of the mistakes that it made. And go through And fix everything without you ever having to touch the code. This lesson covers a real world scenario of a commit hook running based on a refactor that was made when extracting some types. And it shows how running commit with an agent, if you allow the commit to give exhaustive information on what went wrong, the agent can continue on and make all the changes for you.

If you ever want to see data represented in a certain way, such as a chart or a graph, to better understand what's going on in the world, you can use AI's to grab the most recent data and then convert it into any visual format you want. This is enabled in AI studio with Gemini through what's called grounding from web search, structured output formatting data, and code execution, which can run Python and generate charts. This lesson is going to walk you through the challenges of using grounding, especially when working with numbers which need to be accurate. How you can use image recognition and convert that to structured output. And then the challenges of using code execution. Especially when AI's are confident that the code ran even though the code failed. At the end, we still get to generating a chart through the online editor and then we take it also to set up in Cursor in a local environment where we can run all the way through YOLO mode and just click around some buttons and get our chart.
