Getting Started with Elixir

The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an application-level protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems. It is a generic, stateless, protocol which can be used for many tasks beyond its use for hypertext, such as name servers and distributed object management systems, through extension of its request methods, error codes and headers.

Previously to tackle manual restarts due to server crashes , process management tools were used.

Understand the three basic parts of making HTTP requests in Elm: 1) Building the request, 2) Writing a JSON decoder, 3) Sending the request using the Elm runtime, and reacting to the results with messages.

HTTP requests are just pieces of data in Elm. When we want to send them, we hand them off to Elm's runtime, and it notifies us when the request is done. An important part of working with HTTP requests that fetch JSON is JSON decoding, the process by which we can turn untyped JSON data into Elm types that are safe to work with.

We will use the NativeScript Text-to-Speech plugin to have the iOS and Android speech synthesizers speak a provided text.

This allows us to dial phone numbers from our app using the device's phone capabilities as well as pre filling SMS messages for your app's users.

We will use the [NativeScript-Email plugin from Eddy Verbruggen](https://github.com/EddyVerbruggen/nativescript-email) to compose email messages from our app that the user can send out.

Using the [NativeScript-DrawingPad](https://github.com/bradmartin/nativescript-drawingpad) plugin in a NativeScript app you can create a drawing pad. This is great for capturing signatures or any touch drawing on the device.

We will use the [NativeScript Speech Recognition plugin by Eddy Verbruggen](https://github.com/EddyVerbruggen/nativescript-speech-recognition) to convert speech to text. The plugin provides a clean abstraction over the [Android SpeechRecognizer](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/speech/SpeechRecognizer.html) and the [iOS SFSpeechRecognizer](https://developer.apple.com/reference/speech/sfspeechrecognizer).

NativeScript is a framework that let's you build JavaScript to native applications. In this lesson, we will set up a native app using the NativeScript command-line interface. We will then take a brief look at some of the project it generates.

`curl` is how you make HTTP requests from the command line. It's awesome for testing out APIs because you have full control over all the headers that are sent, and you don't have to interact with a UI to send a request. 

We’ll learn how to make requests and change the HTTP method, set headers, and send JSON and url encoded form data. We'll also see how to increase readability by splitting long requests into multiple lines and formatting JSON responses with `jsome`, a node module.

The pipe operator is an easy to use and powerful feature of Elixir. It takes the output from the expression on the left, and automatically passes it as the first argument to the function on the right. This is especially useful when chaining together multiple function calls or data transformations. Using the pipe operator results in code that's easier to read, write and refactor.

To make our opengraph image generation function, we'll have to work out a way to pass the querystring variables from the original URL through to the React script running inside the headless browser. We choose to set them on the window using another injected script, and we also cover handling URL decoding of querystring components.

The syntax to pass arguments into functions is akin to many other languages. Elixir functions are uniquely recognized when running based off of the number of arguments passed in (a term called *arity*). This means you can define functions with the same name, so long as a different number of arguments is passed in.

The main purpose of a web server is to export an api. The most common protocol is http requsts. In this lesson, we will learn how to benchmark your app's http api's using autocannon in order to be able to track down performance bottlenecks or inefficient code.

Elixir uses `=` as an operator, but rather than assigning values to variables with it, it *matches* values on the right hand side of the `=` with the left side. This can be used in simple values, more complex data structures, and powerful condition checking.

Put into simpler terms, pattern matching is Elixir's way of assigning variables.
