Learn Elixir, Jekyll and Radium

These videos include the introductory steps to writing your first Elixir function and beginning to understand some key concepts in Elixir that make it unique. 

Some of those concepts include:
- the Mix build tool
- project structure
- collections of functions written in modules

- pattern matching and common uses for it

Elixir is a dynamic, functional language designed for building scalable and maintainable applications.

Elixir leverages the Erlang VM, known for running low-latency, distributed and fault-tolerant systems, while also being successfully used in web development and the embedded software domain.

Getting Started with Elixir

Jekyll is a blog-aware static site generator. You can write text in markdown or HTML and Jekyll uses layouts to create a static website. You can tweak how you want the site URLs to look, what data gets displayed on the site, and more.

After watching the collection you'll be able to:

* Install plugins to add new features to your blog

Jekyll is a parsing engine bundled as a ruby gem used to build static websites from dynamic components such as templates, partials, liquid code, markdown, etc. Jekyll is known as "a simple, blog aware, static site generator".

Bootstrap a new Elixir project using Mix (a build tool included when you install Elixir), with its built in project generation.

Elixir code is organized into groups of functions called modules. You can create your own modules and built on top of predefined modules that are a part of Elixir by default.

Write a New Function Inside of an Elixir Module

The syntax to pass arguments into functions is akin to many other languages. Elixir functions are uniquely recognized when running based off of the number of arguments passed in (a term called *arity*). This means you can define functions with the same name, so long as a different number of arguments is passed in.

Arity is a key concept to be aware of when reading documentation and writing your own code.

Pass arguments into Elixir functions and understand arity

Elixir uses `=` as an operator, but rather than assigning values to variables with it, it *matches* values on the right hand side of the `=` with the left side. This can be used in simple values, more complex data structures, and powerful condition checking.

Put into simpler terms, pattern matching is Elixir's way of assigning variables.

Jekyll is a blog-aware, static site generator written in Ruby. 

Requirements:
* Ruby version 2.5.0 or above
* RubyGems

Blogging is built into Jekyll. You write blog posts as markdown or HTML files and Jekyll turns them blog posts. They follow a specific naming convention to be picked up and used by Jekyll

All blog post files require front matter. Front matter is a snippet of YAML at the top of a file. Front matter is used to set your layouts and meta data.

In a CSS library like Bootstrap we can set a button's style to be "primary" or "secondary" by appending classes. For React components we want to be able to do this via props. Radium enables this by composing styles via an array. This mimicks the cascade of CSS.

React's inline styles allow components to stand on their own by not requiring any external CSS. However HTML's style attributes don't support pseudo selectors like `:hover` and `:active`. By using Radium to listen to mouse events we can restore `:hover` and `:active` selectors to inline styles.

[Jekyll](https://jekyllrb.com/) is a static site generator built in [Ruby](https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/) and available to generate and host websites on [GitHub Pages](https://pages.github.com/). In this course, you'll install the Jekyll gem, use the command line tool to generate a new project, inspect the scaffolded project, and finally, serve the starter website.
