Learn Elm, Flexbox and Twit

It's tempting to pick up a framework which has preselected flexbox or grid as the layout tool of choice, but it's important to learn when and why to use each method. This leads to slimmer stylesheets which results in better site performance, and less likelihood for "hacks" to make one method do what the other does inherently better.

Throughout this collection, we will be progressively styling a responsive landing page template while building your knowledge on when to select grid or flexbox for any layout scenario. Spoiler alert: sometimes the best solution is using both!

The specification describes a CSS box model optimized for user interface design. In the flex layout model, the children of a flex container can be laid out in any direction, and can “flex” their sizes, either growing to fill unused space or shrinking to avoid overflowing the parent.

Create a Landing Page with CSS Grid and Flexbox

Flexbox is a powerful way to layout HTML so that elements can grow to fit the size of their container.  It can also control how the elements are positioned within a flexed container.

CSS Tips and Tricks

In this course we’ll learn how to create Twitter bots. We’ll first learn how to interface with the Twitter API using Twit.js, which allows us to post statuses, search tweets, and interact with followers. We’ll create several example bots that show the diversity of possibilities, using powerful tools such as RiTa.js, Google’s Cloud Vision API, and Tracery. Elm is a beginner friendly functional reactive programming language for building web applications. It contains a small but powerful set of language constructs, such as, static types, algebraic data types, immutability, and pure functions. Elm provides and requires the use of a specific architecture that’s well suited for sensible application construction. Elm’s type system and architecture may feel constraining at first, but they ultimately provide the programmer with some neat benefits including comprehensible code, and a much improved refactoring experience.

Flexbox is a wonderful tool built into the CSS specification. Using flexbox doesn't require any special framework or library, just a browser with CSS3 support. It is so awesome, and makes the arranging elements on a page almost fun!

After setting `display: flex` on a parent element, you can use `flex-direction` to switch the container to be either a `row` or a `column`.

We also switch the body between `row` and `column`.

We can space items inside of a flexed component in the "on-axis" direction, with `justify-content`.

Justify content can take the following values: `flex-start`, `flex-end`, `center`, `space-between`, `space-around`, or `space-evenly`

We changed the axis layout with 'justify-content', and the "off axis" layout is controlled by 'align-items'.  The most common values are `flex-start`, `flex-end`, or `center`.

To set the wrap settings of elements inside of a container, we can set the `flex-wrap` css attribute.  The most common values are: `nowrap`, `wrap`, or `wrap-reverse`

To stretch individual elements to fit the given space, we can set the `flex-grow` or `flex` attributes to any integer.  Other surrounding elements will grow proportionally to their `flex-grow` or `flex` attributes.

We have a parent HTML element that takes up the height and width of the page. We will make that parent element into a flex container, and then vertically center its child element using `align-items: center;`. Finally, we'll use `justify-content: center;` to horizontally center the element.

Learn the fundamental difference between CSS grid and flexbox layout, and create utility classes for each `display` value. Then begin to apply and expand these concepts to style the landing page navigation.

CSS Grid and Flexbox are very useful tools for providing the overall layout of a page.  I take a specific design and create the high level layout using css grid and then arrange an individual section using flex box.

With just a handful of CSS properties, we can create an intrinsically responsive photo gallery using flexbox. This is accomplished by setting our preferred width as the `flex-basis` value and allowing items to both shrink and grow. The use of `object-fit: cover` on images allows them to fully fill up the list item without distortion or overflow. We finish the gallery with a small animated effect that alters `opacity`.

We are going to go ahead and install globally create-elm-app (because it has the best DX so far) and show how would you typically start any production-ready Elm app, and also add elm-ui as a dependency and show the first elements with elm-ui.

To showcase the power of elm-ui, in this lesson we will show how incredibly easy it is to center an element both horizontally and vertically on a screen with elm-ui, since this is a typical problem while doing regular CSS.

In this lesson we will start to get to know the row and column functions in elm-ui to help us layout our application. We will choose the mobile first approach in which we will display everything in one column, show how to handle two columns and explain that later when we do responsible we will be able to play a bit more with this. Since the concept of margin does not exist in elm-ui, in this lesson we learn how to solve it by using spacing and we will talk about padding in a future lesson.

We will use the pink box element that we had from previous lessons while implementing our fancy dashboard and we will turn it into our Card "component", the piece of UI that we are going to repeat and that will have its own state later on the course. 

To do this, we'll first manipulate the background color and text color, then change the height and width of the card. We will want to change the title for each of the cards and to do so we will accept a title argument that will be passed down to our text element within the card to be displayed.
