In this course, Colby is going to do a deep dive into creating a full store for your products. You'll learn how to set up and use GraphCMS as your content management system. Displaying a list of physical locations is helpful, but showing them on a map, giving your potential customers the ability to see how close each store really is to their location is even better.

GraphCMS supports adding coordinates as a field to our data models, where we can dynamically pull those coordinates in and add them to a map.

We'll walk through how we can loop through our store locations and add each one to a new React Leaflet map. We'll also learn about some pitfalls of using React Leaflet in an app framework like Next.js and how we can solve it with dynamic imports and manual image imports.

While we have a lot of options for the different payment gateways that we can use in order to take payments, we're going to use [Stripe](https://stripe.com/), which is a well-known secure payment processing platform, where it's going to be able to easily integrate into our Snipcart account.

Once we add our Stripe account, we will head over to the Snipcart dashboard where we will connect Stripe as our payment gateway, which simply allows us to go through an authentication process, where we will have Stripe configured.

We want to make sure that when we add something to the cart, we're going to be able to actually add it to our cart. I'm going to be using [Snipcart](https://spacejelly.dev/snipcart) to handle my cart and checkout flow. 

We will also our cart update inside of our header with that dynamic value. To do that, we will sign up and install Snipcart where we add the installation to a custom document file and add our class name and data attributes to all of our Add to Cart buttons.

Lastly, we will install the useSnipcart hook so that we can grab that context to show that subtotal anywhere inside of our application.

Express will be used to create our HTTP application. We'll need it to post to our endpoints and listen to our port.

We need the `cors` package to make cross-origin requests since the front-end will be a different origin than the server.

Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is the idea of grouping permissions together by a role. Users are assigned a role through the Auth0 dashboard the corresponding permissions are placed on the user's access token (JWT) after authenticating. That access token can be extracted by an Auth0 SDK (this video uses JavaScipt/ ReactJS) and sent to a custom server. 

Server Side logic (this video is based on NodeJS and ExpressJS), can then check for specific permissions and then allow or reject certain resources.

JavaScript® (often shortened to JS) is a lightweight, interpreted, object-oriented language with first-class functions, most known as the scripting language for Web pages, but used in many non-browser environments as well such as node.js or Apache CouchDB. It is a prototype-based, multi-paradigm scripting language that is dynamic, and supports object-oriented, imperative, and functional programming styles.

Nx is not only capable of scaffolding frontend projects, but it also supports a lot of backend setups. In this specific lesson, we're going to explore the setup we previously generated, specifically inspecting how passing `--frontentProject` to the Express.js schematic automatically sets up a [Webpack dev proxy](https://webpack.js.org/configuration/dev-server/#devserverproxy) to make it easy to call the backend API.

When we talk about monorepos, we don't talk about the frontend specifically. Quite contrary: an Nx workspace can also host our backend apps. This opens up completely new possibilities in terms of exchanging code between the frontend and corresponding backend API. But before diving deeper into this topic, let's first learn about how we can use the `@nrwl/express` package to generate a [Express](https://expressjs.com/) based API application.

In this lesson, we will use Auth0 to generate a JWT that we can use to validate future requests to our server.

We will then return that token and test that it works when authenicated by our middleware.

During the lesson, we'll also briefly look at a strategy to keep your credentials out of source control using a .gitignore file.

Sending a JSON Web Token is one way to valid your identity as a user of an API or service. In this lesson, we will see how to add an Express middleware which will check for a valid JWT and return a 401 Unauthorized error if not.

One way to secure API routes is by using JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) which are passed with each request and checked before a lesson is returned. To do this, you need an OAuth server to provide the signing and authentication of these tokens. Auth0 provides this for free for up to 7,000 users. 

In this lesson, we'll configure Auth0 and gather the details we need to be able to secure our API routes.

Now that we can pinpoint our location, we noticed that it's not exactly the most accurate indication of where we're at. To help, Leaflet provides an accuracy indicator in meters that we can use to show on the map the margin of error for that location.

Most of us are able to identify where we're located on the map, but it can be hard to visualize that in context to other locations. To help, we can add a marker to the map to show our location.

Rather than setting a location manually, web browsers provide a way that we can request access to someone's location. This lets us personalize features and particularly in our use case, find where the person is on the map to see what's close to them.

While we were able to find our location, Leaflet's geolocation features don't set a marker by default. What they do provide is event handlers that allow us to know when the location is found.

As we just noticed, we don't get the shadows to our markers by default. While we can add a custom one, we can use the default shadows which will work just as well with our custom markers.

Not only can we use the Leaflet Icon instance to add a custom image, we can create completely custom HTML! This opens the door to a lot of possibilities that you can't do with only an image like using CSS to add effects.

## Model & Major Platform Updates

* **Gemini 2.5 Flash Arrives:** Google released Gemini 2.5 Flash ([Google Developers Blog](https://developers.googleblog.com/en/start-building-with-gemini-25-flash/)), their first unified reasoning model with thinking budgets. It's positioned as a high-performance, cost-effective option. Notably, Google's benchmarks included comparisons against OpenAI's very recent O4-mini, drawing praise for transparency ([Nathan Lambert](https://x.com/natolambert/status/1912958672881303943)). It's available via the Gemini API, AI Studio, Vertex, and the Gemini app. The [Live API docs](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/live) are also updated.
* **OpenAI Counters with o3/o4-mini & Codex CLI:** OpenAI launched [o3 and o4-mini](https://openai.com/index/introducing-o3-and-o4-mini/), highlighting their agentic capabilities and tool use during Chain-of-Thought. Alongside these, they released the open-source [Codex CLI](https://github.com/openai/codex), a coding agent designed to leverage these new models. Interestingly, the OpenAI dev behind Codex CLI was spotted [using Cursor](https://x.com/chuhang1122/status/1912786904812294312).
* **Claude Gets Research Superpowers:** Anthropic rolled out a major [Claude upgrade](https://x.com/jowettbrendan/status/1912446262756151732) introducing a "Research" agent capability. It can search the web and internal docs, chain queries, and explore topics agentically, building citations along the way. They also added Google Workspace integration (Gmail, Calendar, Docs) for paid users. (Official blog post link pending confirmation).
* **Cursor 0.49 Update:** The latest Cursor update ([Changelog 0.49](https://www.cursor.com/changelog/0-49)) brings several enhancements: improved Cursor Rules generation and attachment, better chat history access, built-in diff reviews, image support in MCP context, agent command editing/skipping, global ignore files, added models (Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok 3, GPT-4.1), and project structure context for the agent. ## Tooling & Protocol Developments

* **MCP Nuances:** David Cramer cautioned against simply [proxying OpenAPI specs via MCP](https://x.com/zeeg/status/1913289979368796671), arguing it misuses the protocol and ignores LLM limitations in tool selection and JSON handling.
* **MCP Transport Clarification:** Harald Kirschner clarified the newer "Streamable HTTP" transport ([MCP Spec](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2025-03-26/basic/transports)), noting it's primarily HTTP-based, with Server-Sent Events (SSE) as an optional upgrade for streaming server messages, deprecating the older standalone SSE transport. Discussions on implementation and future streaming enhancements are ongoing ([TS SDK Issue #220](https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/typescript-sdk/issues/220), [MCP Roadmap](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/development/roadmap)).

I've tried out a few videos and was really impressed with the quality. Pro tip: In AI Studio, you can use an image as a reference when generating video ([API Docs](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/video#generate_from_images)), though surprisingly, Gemini doesn't support that yet. It's heavily rate-limited at the moment, but still fun to play with for generating short 8-second clips.
