Figma Auto Layout gives our designs superpowers. By adding auto-layout to our button component, we can change the text within the button while automatically maintaining consistent horizontal and vertical padding, just like we would in code.

Designing OpenGraph unfurls in Figma

Figma is a collaborative prototyping tool that allows you to responsively design your applications, with resolution presets for all of the most popular devices. In this course, we will explore the fundamentals of Figma’s toolset that you can use for various design functions.

webpack is a tool to build JavaScript modules in your application. To start using webpack from its cli or api, follow the Installation instructions. webpack simplifies your workflow by quickly constructing a dependency graph of your application and bundling them in the right order. webpack can be configured to customise optimisations to your code, to split vendor/css/js code for production, run a development server that hot-reloads your code without page refresh and many such cool features.

As you refactor and modify applications, it's difficult to manage and keep track of files as they become unused. Keeping this "dead" code around adds noise to your application and reduces clarity. Just as ESLint can tell us when variables become unused, Webpack (with the help of the unused-files-webpack-plugin) can tell us when entire files become unused. First, we'll install the plugin with npm and save it as a devDependency. Next, we'll use npm run scripts to build a new command that will run Webpack with the plugin. Finally, we'll learn how to use Webpack environment variables to conditionally add plugins to your Webpack config. By the end of the lesson, you'll have a useful cli command you can run to check for unused modules in your Webpack build

Bundle size has a huge impact on JavaScript performance. It's not just about download speed, but all the JavaScript we ship to the browser needs to be parsed and compiled before it can be executed. Keeping our bundle in check can be difficult, but it's much easier when we can see where the bloat is coming from. One approach to building high performance applications with `webpack` is to take advantage of code-splitting to only load the needed JavaScript on initial load and asynchronously load additional JavaScript bundles when needed. In this lesson, we'll add React and ReactDOM to our project and create an entry point for the React application. We'll also configure Babel with the React preset so Babel can transpile our JSX into JavaScript that will run in a browser.

The `development` and `production` modes in `webpack` optimize the output in different ways. In `development` mode, the focus is on faster builds and a better developer experience. In `production` mode, the focus is on highly optimized bundles, leading to a better user experience. The good news is, we can have both. In this lesson, we'll separate our `webpack` config into two configurations and update our scripts to run the right config for our needs.

The Chrome Developer Tools (DevTools for short), are a set of web authoring and debugging tools built into Google Chrome.

A potential downside to all the transformations our tools perform on our code is that when you need to debug your application, the code being served isn’t the code you wrote. This is where source maps save the day. We can serve transformed and bundled code, then debug in DevTools against our source code right in the browser. In this lesson we’ll take a look at the default debug experience without source maps, then we’ll configure webpack to generate source maps and look at the enhanced experience.

As of `webpack` version 4, there is a top-level configuration option called `mode`. Mode allows us optimize for build speed during development, while optimizing for runtime performance and smaller bundles for production builds. In this lesson, we'll add the mode key to our webpack configuration and look at the difference in output between the `production` and `development` settings.

Even if it's only a simple one, we'll need to serve up an HTML file to run our JavaScript app. We can hardcode the bundle path into a script tag, but then if we want to change our bundle name, we need to update that in our webpack config and in our html file. It's inconvenient during development to have to run a script each time we make a change to our source. We can have webpack generate an updated bundle as we make changes. In this lesson, we'll create an `npm` script to run webpack in watch mode and  see it in action as we modify some source files.

Generating new bundles when we change files is a great start, and the live-reload provided by webpack dev server is convenient, but a reload means we lose our application state. When you want to see the results of minor adjustments while your application is in a specific state, it would be more convenient if we could have our changes reflected without losing that state. In this lesson, we'll add hot reloading to our development webpack server so our changes will be reflected in the browser when we save new changes, without the need to a refresh.

In this course, we'll start with an empty directory and build up a starter project for building a React application.

Along the way, we'll work with webpack and babel to transform, code-split, and bundle our code. We'll create npm scripts to execute commands and work with git and GitHub to track changes and share our code in public. We'll build quality into our project with Jest for unit testing and ESLint for static analysis. We'll configure Prettier for formatting and then enforce all these quality checks before commit with git hooks. We'll even incorporate some accessibility checks and enforce some best practices in React with react-axe, React's StrictMode and a default ErrorBoundary component.

I often find myself wondering how to use certain APIs in certain situations, and I have a couple of keywords that I try and search up on Google. And what you can really do in this situation is turn to GitHub and see how other people have actually used this code on public projects. The GitHub CLI enables us to run searches like this, and we can take the results and work on them programmatically. And inside of Cursor with their Composer AI agent, we can search for the files we want, and we can tell the agent to download them and then work on them and inspect them and teach us how those things work together.

Implement virtual scrolling to handle large datasets in an HTML table. Start with a basic table that renders 10,000 rows of data. The browser can struggle with this amount of DOM nodes to render at one time, especially on low end devices.

The most difficult tasks will require the strongest AI models. And those models simply aren't available as AI agents inside of your tooling. So the best workflows are to drag and drop the files you need to be changed and analyzed inside of a reasoning model such as OpenAI's O1 Pro, then letting it create a giant plan for your dumber AI agents to work on. The key here is that instead of just copying and pasting the entire plan into Cursors Composer or your AI agent, it's to create a file inside of your project and ask your agent to tackle the plan one step at a time. This allows you ample opportunity between each step to test and verify the micro steps along the way. Otherwise, as I've experienced many times, a session can go way off track and you burn a lot of time and burn a lot of AI requests Cursors Composer and it starts churning through a plan Cursors Composer and making lots of unwanted changes. Planning AI Agent Sessions with Reasoning Models

AI agents will inevitably make mistakes—it's just a matter of when. A key tool in your toolbox, once they do make mistakes after working on a problem for a while, is to use **git diff** to capture all of the changes they've made. 

Once you have those changes in a text file, you have a portable document that you can test against other AI models. This allows you to move the problem into smarter reasoning models with smaller context windows, helping you isolate and focus on the issue at hand.

**git diff** has been invaluable when working with AI agents because they'll often make many good changes but also slip in one tiny error. Finding that one small mistake is **git diff**’s superpower.

AI agents are notorious for getting tasks done, but also taking some shortcuts in TypeScript, and falling back to using things like Any, which you might not want in your codebase. So in this situation, when you run git commit, you can set up a commit hook to expose all of the linting, expose all of the TypeScript errors. And then you just let the AI agent run that commit hook and it can find all of the mistakes that it made. And go through And fix everything without you ever having to touch the code. This lesson covers a real world scenario of a commit hook running based on a refactor that was made when extracting some types. And it shows how running commit with an agent, if you allow the commit to give exhaustive information on what went wrong, the agent can continue on and make all the changes for you.

If you ever want to see data represented in a certain way, such as a chart or a graph, to better understand what's going on in the world, you can use AI's to grab the most recent data and then convert it into any visual format you want. This is enabled in AI studio with Gemini through what's called grounding from web search, structured output formatting data, and code execution, which can run Python and generate charts. This lesson is going to walk you through the challenges of using grounding, especially when working with numbers which need to be accurate. How you can use image recognition and convert that to structured output. And then the challenges of using code execution. Especially when AI's are confident that the code ran even though the code failed. At the end, we still get to generating a chart through the online editor and then we take it also to set up in Cursor in a local environment where we can run all the way through YOLO mode and just click around some buttons and get our chart.
