What is Accessible Name Calculation?

Golang has no built-in function(s) to filter an array. This lesson will teach you two different ways to filter.

The first is to create a separate array and add the filtered elements to it. This works great, but doesn't use memory as efficiently as the second way.

The second way shows you how to filter by altering the original array in place without making another array to hold the filtered elements. But, it has a side-effect that I'll tell you about which may help you decide which approach you will use to filter your array.

There are numerous ways that you can declare and create arrays and slices in Go. This lesson will show you several and I talk about the advantages and disadvantages of one over another. After watching, you will better understand all of the possible ways you can declare/create as well as the idiomatic way.

Declare Arrays and Slices in Go

Go has a special indexing syntax that forms the basis of removing one or more elements from a slice. I will teach you this syntax and show you its various forms.

Based upon that, I'll show you how to remove a single element from a slice. However, you may find this somewhat limiting. I also will show you a more typical example of removing elements from a slice as we iterate over it. This technique shows you how to remove multiple elements from a slice.

There is a built-in append function that is used to append elements to a slice. We'll see in this lesson that the append function works only with slices, not arrays. There are also some nifty alternate uses of the the append function that make appending super easy.

There are a couple of different ways to iterate over an array or slice in Go. The primary approach is to use range, which handles the iteration for you. However, you can also use a traditional for loop if you need to do something out of the ordinary, like iterating in reverse or skipping every other element.

There are numerous ways to sort slices in Go.

The simplest way uses some basic built-in functions from Go's **sort** package to allow you to easily sort slices of primitives, that being **Strings**, **Ints** and **Float64s**. Using these sort functions, we don't have control over the sort order as the data will be sorted in ascending alphabetical (for strings) or ascending numerical (for Ints and Float64s) order.

In this lesson, we will take a quick look at the easiest way to sort slices of primitives. We will learn about using some of the handy built-in functions in Go's sort package, including:

* sort.Strings: Sorting a slice of strings
* sort.Ints: Sorting a slice of ints
* sort.Float64s: Sorting a slice of float64s

There are numerous ways to sort slices in Go.

In this lesson, we will take a quick look at an easy way to sort a slice of structs or primitives. We will learn about using one of the handy built-in functions in Go's sort package called *sort.Slice*. This function takes a slice to sort as an argument and a *less function* or *less func* for short as the second argument. You will write this *less function* to sort the slice however you wish.

Go's sort.Slice function looks like this: *sort.Slice(someSlice, func(i, j int) bool)*. It's super-easy to write an anonymous *less function* to sort.

As you will see, it's easy to use this *less function* to do simple and even complex sorts of your structs with minimal effort.

Landmark regions are used by screen readers to make it easier for users to navigate the content on the page by defining the structure of the page.  Tools like the Rotor in VoiceOver rely on landmark regions to provide users with the ability to skip directly to the desired section of the page.  We can do this either using HTML5 landmark elements or `<div>` elements with aria roles. In the past, the recommendation was to use both but now we should only use one or the other.

The following are ARIA roles for landmark regions:
* `banner`
* `complementary`
* `contentinfo`
* `form`
* `main`
* `navigation`
* `search`
* `application`

Using our accessibility auditing toolkit we can find issues concerning landmark regions in our web application.  The react-axe library will report findings in the JavaScript console of the browser.  We could also run the axe browser extension to see the same results.  The tota11y browser extension will annotate any landmark regions on the page and therefore if none are annotated it may indicate that they aren't any (_NOTE: tota11y will only annotate landmark regions using aria roles and not those using HTML5 elements_).  Finally using the VoiceOver Rotor in Safari will show us whatever landmark regions have been defined in the Landmarks menu.

We can find issues with heading levels by utilizing our accessibility auditing tools.  The library react-axe, as well as the browser extension axe, will report any findings concerning heading levels.  The browser extension tota11y will annotate all heading levels on a page and show any in red that have issues.  Finally, we can check the Rotor in VoiceOver in Safari.  The Rotor should have a Headings menu and will list in order all of them that are found on the page.  If headings are missing or inappropriate this will help us find them as well.

Similar to Landmark Regions, Heading Levels are used by web browsers, plug-ins, and assistive technologies to provide in-page navigation.

## Rules
* Each page should have at least one `<h1>`
* Pages should be structured in a hierarchical manner
    * `<h1>`: being the most important (usually page titles or main content heading)
    * `<h2>`: usually major section headings
    * `<h3>`: sub-sections of the `<h2>`
    * and so on
* Do not skip heading levels - always follow consecutive order
* Do not use text formatting, such as font size or bold to give the visual appearance of headings.  
    * Use actual heading (`<h1>` - `<h6>`) for all content headings
* Do not use heading levels to achieve visual results only

We have a number of options to use when testing for accessibility issues concerning alternative text for images.  The react-axe library and axe browser extension will both report when an image is missing alternative text.  The tota11y browser extension will annotate any images that are missing alternative text.  Running eslint with the eslint-plugin-jsx-a11y plugin installed will report on any `<img>` elements missing an `alt` attribute.  Finally, we can use a screen reader to actually hear what is read when an image has focus.

Test for Image Alternative Text Accessibility Issues

Images must have text alternatives that describe the information or function 
represented by them so they can be read and understood by those using screen readers.

## Alternative text for images
* All `<img>` elements should have an `alt` attribute provided
    * When not provided many screen readers will fallback to reading the file name instead
* The `alt` value should not include words like _“image”_, _“picture”_ or _“icon”_
    * Screen readers are already announcing that the element is an image
* Images that are decorative only and provide no information or function to the page should be hidden from Assistive Technologies by providing an empty `alt` attribute (`alt=””`)

Labeling inputs, elements, and widgets add context and clarity for assistive technology such as screen readers. Some elements do not already have some sort of labeling text being displayed visually, such as a `<button>` without descriptive text or an `<icon>` or part of a more complex widget.  Others may have some form of text label but it is not descriptive enough for those who cannot see it.  The addition of an `aria-label` attribute to the element will provide it with an accessible label so that when that element is focused by a screen reader, for instance, a label is read that better describes the element and what a user can expect from it.
