Starting from a prebuilt frontend, Jason Lengstorf guides you through the creation of a "Corgi Up-boop App" that uses Netlify Functions and Hasura. You can view [the deployed final product on Netlify](https://egghead-serverless-functions.netlify.app/).

You'll set up the Netlify CLI, and configure a local development environment before writing and deploying functions with a few different use cases.

The first example function bypasses CORS restrictions to retrieve corgi data from an example third-party API.

Next, you'll configure environmental variables to securely communicate with the Unsplash API without exposing private keys to the client.

Serverless functions don't persist data by themselves, so we will use  Hasura to create a GraphQL API for tracking the number of "boops" each corgi receives.

It's tempting to pick up a framework which has preselected flexbox or grid as the layout tool of choice, but it's important to learn when and why to use each method. Converting a Serverless App to run on AWS Lambda and DynamoDB with Serverless Framework

CSS uses a global namespace for CSS Selectors that can easily result in style conflicts throughout your application when building an application using modern web components. You can avoid this problem by nesting CSS selectors or use a styling convention like BEM but this becomes complicated quickly and won’t scale.

CSS-in-JS avoids these problems entirely by generating unique class names when styles are converted to CSS. This allows you to think about styles on a component level with out worrying about styles defined elsewhere.

In this course, you will learn how to express popular SCSS (Sass) language features using latest JavaScript features. We will convert simple examples from SCSS to CSS-in-JS. GraphQL provides a really great interface for product development. We can combine that with the deployment model Netlify gives us for serverless functions to ship a graphql api.

**Note:** At `00:44` I say `graphql.js` but show `index.js`. `graphql.js` is the file that should be used.

Deploying a GraphQL API on Netlify serverless functions with apollo-server-lambda

We take advantage of Netlify Identity and Apollo client links to pass the user's Bearer token to the GraphQL API running on Netlify functions. This allows us to implement access control on the server using the user object passed in from the Identity service.

We take a set of DynamoDB queries that insert, update, and query for TODOs and replace the entire backend of our GraphQL API which is currently using FaunaDB. We cover DynamoDB operation ReturnValues for put, update, and query operations, implementing transformer functions to coordinate the stored representation in DynamoDB with your business objects, and then we get into Netlify. Netlify's environment variables don't allow us to use AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID as an environment variable name. Once we fix that, we set up a pull request on GitHub, which results in a Deploy Preview that includes our new GraphQL function deployment!

Replacing FaunaDB with DynamoDB as the Backend of a GraphQL API with Zero Client Changes

We compare Netlify Functions with AWS Lambda and talk about why we'd move from one to the other. Netlify Functions is a high level DX on top of AWS Lambda, so we'll have to find a new DX as well.
