Learn Algolia, Android and Angularjs

Today’s users expect great things from their search experiences — speed, relevance, and usability, to name a few. Algolia provides developers with out-of-the-box and customizable search experiences that are a joy to build.

This introductory course on the Algolia search solution focuses on the user-facing part of search. Using the Algolia InstantSearch.js front-end library, we’ll see how to build an engaging search experience in no time. (28 minutes, to be exact.) 

**Prerequisites:** 
You don’t need previous experience with search to follow this course — we’ll use an example index with an e-commerce data set preconfigured. We will work mainly in JavaScript, so basic JS knowledge is expected.

Getting Started with Algolia InstantSearch.js

One of the hardest things about writing non-trivial applications is managing state. In our attempt to effectively manage state, we introduce additional complexity by trying to control application flow and the amount of code volume that comes from all of this. Redux gives us the ability to address state management and communication in astonishingly simple semantics that can be explained in just a couple minutes. The beauty of Redux is that it is not only a library but a pattern that works very will within Angular 1.x applications. In this series, we are going to learn how to integrate redux (the pattern) into Eggly from scratch and then introduce **ng-redux** and add in **Redux DevTools** at the end for fun.

Build Angular 1.x Apps with Redux

Using Angular 2 Patterns in Angular 1.x Apps

How much work would it take for you to move all of your directives and their templates to several different new directories? We will learn how to add an Android library to our project and translate it’s Java api to NativeScript. For this lesson, we will look at [Filestack’s Android SDK](https://github.com/filestack/filepicker-android) built with Gradle. Specifically, we will cover how to immediately start working with the library even when a [NativeScript](/q/nativescript) plugin does not exist for it.

Java has been around a long time and when it comes to Android, you will encounter some structures that may throw you for a loop on how to code against with NativeScript. Let’s examine a few common Java/Android api constructs you may encounter and how to translate them to NativeScript. Learn how to get references to local files in your app using the ‘file-system’ module as well as how to take advantage of NativeScript’s Observable class to send notification events from one class to another. Lastly, look at considerations with Angular’s NgZone when handling your native libraries data events to update component view bindings.

Translate common Java/Android APIs into NativeScript for Angular Android apps

angular-formly allows you to default the values of fields for your angular forms using the `defaultValue` property. To default the value of a field, you can either initialize the `model` with the default value, or use this `defaultValue` property on the field configuration.

AngularJS validation can be tough, but angular-formly makes it extremely simple with a single validation API that enables basic and advanced field validation. You can specify a string expression, function that returns true/false, or a function that returns a promise which is resolved/rejected.

The Angular Material Layout API wraps the flexbox CSS features with an amazingly easy, powerful HTML markup API. The Layout API hides the complexities of the CSS, is intuitive to use, and eliminates the need for developers to become flexbox experts to implement modern page layouts. 

In this lesson we will learn how to use the Angular Material Container components and the Layout API to implement the layouts specified in design wireframe.

Angular Material: Containers with the Layout API

Themes convey meaning through color, tones, and contrasts. And the theme color palettes, alphas, and shadows deliver a consistent tone to your application and a unified feel for all Angular Material UI components. Theming allows developers to change the intention and meaning of the application by changing the colors and shadows. 

Accessibility is a huge - often overlooked - feature in modern web applications. Angular Material components all implement ARIA features whenever possible. And for usage scenarios where the ARIA attributes are not explicitly provided and cannot be inferred, then Angular Material will provide details console warnings alerting the developer.

Let’s use the Angular Material Theming service to change the background, primary, accent, and warning colors used within the entire application. These will be configured at startup using the $mdThemeProvider.  

Let’s also resolve the two ARIA warnings shown in console. These originate from icon buttons where the ARIA label cannot be inferred. So let’s add a static aria-label and a dynamic, interpolated aria-label to those buttons.

Angular Material: Theming and ARIA

In Angular, we want to keep our controllers lightweight and specific to the view that it is controlling. To accomplish this, we are going to refactor our categories collection into a CategoriesModel. A recurring theme in Angular 2 is that everything is "just a class". When we create our controllers and services in an Angular 2 style, they are also "just a class". We will see this in action as we convert our controller almost verbatim into a service.

Up to this point, we have created an effective, yet rudimentary, implementation of Redux by manually creating an application store, reducers and action creators. We have already made significant progress in simplifying state management within our application, but we have in fact only touched the surface of what Redux has to offer.
