Learn Algolia, Android and Babel

Today’s users expect great things from their search experiences — speed, relevance, and usability, to name a few. Algolia provides developers with out-of-the-box and customizable search experiences that are a joy to build.

This introductory course on the Algolia search solution focuses on the user-facing part of search. Using the Algolia InstantSearch.js front-end library, we’ll see how to build an engaging search experience in no time. (28 minutes, to be exact.) 

**Prerequisites:** 
You don’t need previous experience with search to follow this course — we’ll use an example index with an e-commerce data set preconfigured. We will work mainly in JavaScript, so basic JS knowledge is expected.

We will learn how to add an Android library to our project and translate it’s Java api to NativeScript. For this lesson, we will look at [Filestack’s Android SDK](https://github.com/filestack/filepicker-android) built with Gradle. Specifically, we will cover how to immediately start working with the library even when a [NativeScript](/q/nativescript) plugin does not exist for it.

npm is the package manager for JavaScript. Find, share, and reuse packages of code from hundreds of thousands of developers — and assemble them in powerful new ways.

We can write our package using the latest JavaScript syntax with a compilation step. In this lesson we will install `babel-cli` and `babel-preset-latest` and wire up a `build` script to compile our code using the babel “latest” preset when source files change. This means those using our package can use it in any version of JavaScript even though we are using the latest syntax for our source code.

Building a custom NativeScript XML view component for Android is uniquely different than it’s iOS counterpart because of the Android Context which must be considered. Let’s look at how to properly build a custom view component based on an underlying native view widget. We will also look at what happens when our include.gradle file is not setup properly including handling problems with minimum sdk targets with plugins. Babel has support for the latest version of JavaScript through syntax transformers. These plugins allow you to use new syntax, right now without waiting for browser support.

What is already a nice workflow using Gulp, Browserify, Watchify & Browsersync to enable auto rebuilds & live browser reloading can be further improved by adding Babelify. A simple wrapper around the popular transpiler Babel, Babelify can ‘transform’ source files as they pass through our stream to enable certain Javascript features not yet available in the Browser or Node. We end the lesson by looking at how to generate & extract sourcemaps using `exorcist`.

React Native lets you build mobile apps using only JavaScript. It uses the same design as React, letting you compose a rich mobile UI from declarative components.

Learn to write components that render differently on iOS and Android, but present the same API. First, we'll use the Platform module to change behavior based on the platform. Then, we'll use the platform-specific file extensions, .ios.js and .android.js, to render platform-specific components.

Babel is a compiler that lets us right future JavaScript not yet fully in browsers (ES6 / ES2015, ES7 / ES2016, etc) and transpile it back into code that can be used now. We'll walk through installing babel, writing some future JS syntax, transpiling it, and running it in a browser.

First, install redux with: `npm install --save redux` and install react-redux with: `npm install --save react-redux`

In the top level of your component tree, import `createStore` from redux, and use it to create a new store with a simple reducer:

Also import `Provider` from react-redux:

Then, you can connect any sub components with the `connect` function, by first importing it:

Add Redux to an Existing React Native Application

iOS and Android come with several built in fonts, but if you want to use a custom font in your react native application, you'll need to add it first.

You can add a custom font by copying the font files to your project, telling react native where to find those files by adding an `rnpm` entry to your `package.json` file, and then linking them with `react-native link`. 

Then, you can use that new font by specify it as the `fontFamily` style for a `Text` component, and you can change the `fontWeight` or `fontStyle` component if you've added additional style and weight font files.



Add a Custom Font to a React Native Application

There are two ways to open urls in React Native.  One is to open, and switch to the device's web browser, and the other is to embed the web page within your application.

To open the mobile device's web browser, we'll import `Linking` from react native, and use the `openURL` function, which will open any url that starts with `http` or `https` in that web browser.

If you want to stay within your current application however,  you can import `WebView` from react native, and use that as a component in your application.  Pass in a `uri` param to display that web page in the embedded web view.

When you bring up the on screen keyboard in a mobile app, it will cover any text input or buttons on the bottom half of the screen, which can be frustrating for users.  There are a few common ways to deal with this in React Native - and this video shows the following solutions:

First, you can use the built in `KeyboardAvoidingView` to move components around when the keyboard comes on screen.  It has the advantage to being built in to React Native already - but it can be overly complicated to get this approach to work consistently across both iOS and Android.

There is also a third party library called `KeyboardAwareScrollView`, which will allow your entire view to scroll, and will keep the currently selected text inputs up and out of the way of the keyboard.

This will get you started on how to setup the Javascript API client of Algolia search solution. To follow along the video having a free Algolia account already setup will make things easier (but is not required). Once the client is setup we will test it by pushing a couple of records to an index.

We’ll load a simple JSON file containing 500 actors records from disk and push it to our Algolia index using the Javascript API client.

We’ll learn how to push a small amount of data from a local MySQL database to an Algolia index. The first step is to connect to the DB using the `mysql` package, then select all records from the DB and finally push them to Algolia using the JS API client.

Using the Lodash library, we’ll see how to split large amounts of data from a local MySQL database into smaller chunks and push them to an Algolia index.

The first step to implement Algolia on the front end using Instantsearch : importing and setting up the library with your credentials. This is what will allow the library to initiate the connection to Algolia servers and the first step to complete before adding some useful widgets.
