Decco is a language extension that automatically generates JSON encoders and decoders from type signatures. When adding adding custom Decoders, the error messages that the compiler produces can be quite confusing. This lesson shows the viewer how to use explicit type signatures to narrow down where an error might be coming from in custom codec code. This same pattern can be applied whenever confusing error messages come from code that is written without explicit type signatures.

Decco is a great library for automatically generating JSON encoders and decoders, but most real-world projects will quickly run into the need to add custom data types that Decco doesn't ship with support for. This lesson shows how to simply add a custom data type by implementing a codec that reads and writes Javascript dates as floats.

Although ReasonML has built-in libraries for working with JSON, they are low-level and difficult to use by hand. The Decco library offers automatically generated JSON decoders, and produce a result that keeps the programmer safe at runtime by telling them whether the data they got matched the shape of the data they expected.

ReasonML is a fantastic way to write Javascript! But it doesn't yet have a built-in async / await syntax. Furthermore the built-in libraries for working with Javascript promises are awkward to work with, and produce code that's hard to read. This lesson will teach the viewer how to use the "bs-let" language extension (called a PPX) to achieve readable, easy to write promise-based code.

There are different steps to build an app for the iOS and Android app stores, so here we’ll look at how to build our completed app for Android.  We’ll look at how to build a release for either ad-hoc installation, or for uploading to the Google Play Store.

For Android, we can connect a physical device that will be autodetected by `react-native run-android`, just like the emulator.  Make sure to shut down the emulator first however - so that only one adb device is connected at a time.

React Native uses Flexbox to layout most components, which makes it easy to run your app on devices of many different screen sizes.  We’ll learn the basics of Flexbox in React Native, and how to use it to build a flexible screen layout.  We’ll also look at some differences between flexbox on the web and on mobile.

In this lesson we’ll use `fetch` to get data from an HTTP server, and store it in state in our React Native application. `fetch` works almost identically on the web and React Native - with the possible exception of how it handles cookies.  We’ll also take a look at `axios` - which is an alternative to `fetch`.

React Navigation’s StackNavigator has a default header, which you may or may not want for your application.  We’ll look at how to totally disable the header, as well as how to customize the default header on a per-screen basis.

We’ll use React Navigation to add a modal screen to our app, which will pop up from the bottom, and cover the entire screen.

If a Text Input is on the bottom half of the screen, then it will get covered by the on screen keyboard when a user selects that input.  We’ll show two ways to automatically avoid this by using `KeyboardAvoidingView` or `keyboard-aware-scroll-view`

Once the user submits the form, we’ll take all the information in the text inputs and the camera image, and upload it to our HTTP server.  While the data is uploading, we’ll show the native spinner, and disable the submit button so the user cannot click submit multiple times.

We’ll use `AsyncStorage` to save and load simple text data on the device.  `AsyncStorage` is built into React Native (so it’s easy to get working), but it’s text only, it’s global to your app, and it isn’t built to handle large or complex data.  However - it’s perfect for saving and loading small bits of data like settings and configuration values.

We’ll replace the default React Native app splash screen with a custom splash screen image on Android.  We’ll also use the `react-native-splash-screen` module to help with the configuration.

TypeScript's satisfies operator finally clicked for me when I realized it's almost always used for specific implementations of configuration objects. I've been using Cursor for a very long time and their "Agent" feature in Composer is fairly new, so I'm still getting used to it. But since Windsurf recently got onto the stage with their Cascade agent, they've slowly been gaining the mind share on the UX for coding agents. I decided to put them to the test by putting Windsurf and Cursor on the exact same screen side by side trying to accomplish the same task and to see which workflow I would prefer. I've been a diehard Cursor user for over a year now, so it's going to take a lot for me to switch to a different IDE. But I just have to say, even from this simple demo, Windsurf is looking pretty nice.

This lesson is just going to walk through creating a CLI using both tools to print out inspirational quotes and to explore how they approach the step-by-step of installing packages and running commands and setting up all the files we need to get this running.
