We need the `cors` package to make cross-origin requests since the front-end will be a different origin than the server.

Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is the idea of grouping permissions together by a role. Users are assigned a role through the Auth0 dashboard the corresponding permissions are placed on the user's access token (JWT) after authenticating. That access token can be extracted by an Auth0 SDK (this video uses JavaScipt/ ReactJS) and sent to a custom server. 

Server Side logic (this video is based on NodeJS and ExpressJS), can then check for specific permissions and then allow or reject certain resources.

JavaScript® (often shortened to JS) is a lightweight, interpreted, object-oriented language with first-class functions, most known as the scripting language for Web pages, but used in many non-browser environments as well such as node.js or Apache CouchDB. It is a prototype-based, multi-paradigm scripting language that is dynamic, and supports object-oriented, imperative, and functional programming styles.

Nx is not only capable of scaffolding frontend projects, but it also supports a lot of backend setups. In this specific lesson, we're going to explore the setup we previously generated, specifically inspecting how passing `--frontentProject` to the Express.js schematic automatically sets up a [Webpack dev proxy](https://webpack.js.org/configuration/dev-server/#devserverproxy) to make it easy to call the backend API.

Connect to an Express.js API from a React app in an Nx Workspace

When we talk about monorepos, we don't talk about the frontend specifically. Quite contrary: an Nx workspace can also host our backend apps. This opens up completely new possibilities in terms of exchanging code between the frontend and corresponding backend API. But before diving deeper into this topic, let's first learn about how we can use the `@nrwl/express` package to generate a [Express](https://expressjs.com/) based API application.

On the surface, starting a project sounds easy. First you make some directories, install some dependencies, then you write some code.

But there's a bit more to it than just those three steps.

The type of project you're working on impacts the decisions you make. It gets more complicated when you're working on multiple projects that are related. For example, maybe you have a customer-facing frontend app, an admin dashboard app, and a single backend used for both.

How does this change your directory structures? How should you share code between projects? What happens when you add a Design System into the mix?

It can get hard to keep things straight in your head.

Nx is a tool that aims to solve these problems for you, whether you're working solo on a small full-stack app or on a dev team of thousands.

It's not just an opinionated folder structure. When you create an app with Nx, it generates unit and e2e test setups as well as preparing bundling and code-splitting with Webpack, and stubbing out common features like routing.

One of the coolest features of Nx is its Dependency Graph. The graph can visually show you the relationship between the parts of your application, and is optimized to ensure that compiling, testing, and linting only happens in the affected areas of your project.

Scale React Development with Nx

In this lesson, we will use Auth0 to generate a JWT that we can use to validate future requests to our server.

We will then return that token and test that it works when authenicated by our middleware.

During the lesson, we'll also briefly look at a strategy to keep your credentials out of source control using a .gitignore file.

Sending a JSON Web Token is one way to valid your identity as a user of an API or service. In this lesson, we will see how to add an Express middleware which will check for a valid JWT and return a 401 Unauthorized error if not.

One way to secure API routes is by using JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) which are passed with each request and checked before a lesson is returned. To do this, you need an OAuth server to provide the signing and authentication of these tokens. Auth0 provides this for free for up to 7,000 users. 

In this lesson, we'll configure Auth0 and gather the details we need to be able to secure our API routes.

Configure an Auth0 API Authentication to Use with Your Server

In this lesson, Mark will summarize why it is good to use RequireJS for managing JavaScript dependencies. We'll go over an example of a plain vanilla JavaScript implementation of jQuery, and refactor the code to use RequireJS.

WTF is RequireJS?

In this lesson, we'll look at how to handle errors in syncronous and asyncronous request handler functions. 

We'll also look at custom error middleware that allows for better control over how we return errors to our client based on whether we are in a production or development environment.

Express provides a straightforward workflow to add functionality between the request and the response.

In this space your application can check the request, query other APIs and build up the response in parts before sending the final response.

In this lesson, we'll add an authenication middleware that will check for a specific header and confirm that it has the correct value. If either of these tests fail then the middleware will send an early response with a 401 status.

Create Custom Middleware for Authentication in Express

By default, Express doesn't parse JSON passed in the request body. In fact, the request body is seen as null by Express.

We need to add middleware to allow Express to be able to access the information passed in. In the past, we've had to lean on other libraries such as body-parser. As of version 4.17, Express now comes bundled with it's own JSON middleware.

We will use that middleware in this lesson, build some logic and send a response back to our client.

Parse and Process JSON with Express

Express is a well-known and supported framework for Node web applications. It provides a lot of excellent functionality to process requests, interact with other APIs, handle authentication and return appropriate requests for any client.

This collection will look at providing an API for a specific application but will explore concepts that will be helpful in building a wide variety of applications.

Building an API with Express

In this lesson we will look at serving static files using the static helper provided by Express.

We'll then use the file system module in Node to read the contents of our static directory, select a random file and send the path back to our client.


Serve a random static file with Express

In this lesson we'll introduce our Catchphrase app and use our Express API to serve the image URL. We'll add our custom client side fetch call and deal with CORS issues created by serving our API and application from different origins.

Return JSON from Express and Handle CORS Errors 

In this lesson, we set-up an Express application and have it send a test response. We then test that the server is working using an API client, in this case Insomnia. We'll also install and setup nodemon so our server will reload every time our files change making development much faster.

Set up Express to Automatically Reload on Save with nodemon

Learn how to build a simple REST API to store notes using the latest built-in node features including native ES modules, the fs/promises API, async/await, the nullish coalescing operator, and destructuring. No compilers, no build steps, pure code.

This collection of lessons is great for beginners to Express as long as they are familiar with JavaScript and the HTTP protocol. Those more familiar with node and express will appreciate a fast-paced, modern take on using these popular tools and will likely benefit most from the lessons on input validation, models (which emphasizes a lot of new syntax), using fs/promises to serialize a `Map`, and accessing asynchronous data with `async/await`.

This lesson demonstrates a powerful workflow combining the `ghx` CLI tool with AI assistants (like Google's AI Studio and Cursor's agent) to overcome this hurdle.

5.  **Generate Code:** Prompt the AI (Gemini 2.5 Pro in AI Studio or ChatGPT O3) to generate a *new* MCP server (e.g., with five distinct tools) based *solely* on the provided real-world examples.
6.  **Integrate and Debug:** Set up the generated TypeScript code (`mcp_server.ts`) locally in Cursor, install dependencies (`pnpm install`), and use Cursor's agent (`Cmd+I`) or inline fixes (`Cmd+K`) to resolve TypeScript errors and path issues.
7.  **Configure in Cursor:** Add the newly created MCP server (running via `bun mcp_server.ts`) to Cursor's MCP settings, using the absolute path and the `bun` command.
8.  **Test the MCP Server:** Interact with Cursor's chat agent to call the custom tools (e.g., `add_note`, `list_notes`, `write_managed_file`) defined in the AI-generated MCP server, verifying its functionality.

John Lindquist here with the second issue of AI Dev Essentials! It's been another busy week in the AI tooling world. The biggest splash was probably GPT-4.1 hitting the streets, but there's plenty more action around MCP, Vercel's v0, Google's developer tools, and interesting community discussions. I've spent some time with GPT-4.1 already (specifically in Cursor), and while it shows promise, it didn't quite convince me to switch from Gemini 2.5 Pro yet. It stumbled on a few basic requests where Gemini usually shines on the first attempt.

Cursor is offering it free for now to let users get a feel for it, though they don't recommend it as a default just yet. Curious to hear initial impressions from folks testing it out for coding tasks.

* **Grok 3 in Cursor:** Following other model additions, [Cursor also enabled Grok 3 models](https://x.com/amanrsanger/status/1910434915419906141), with the mini version available for free users. Aman Sanger noted it seems to "think upfront more than other models."

* **Community Hack: Llama 4.0 via Groq in Cursor:** Levi Dan shared a [detailed (and slightly hacky) guide](https://x.com/lxvi_brg/status/1908865544721154455) on how to wire up Groq's fast Llama 4.0 API into Cursor by using the OpenAI API key slot and intercepting requests. A clever workaround for the adventurous!

Lots of movement across different platforms and tools this week:

* **Vercel Ecosystem:**

  * Guillermo Rauch teased [v0 coming to VS Code](https://x.com/rauchg/status/1911524154458984515), hinting at tighter integration for the UI generation tool.

  * v0 also [added AI integrations](https://x.com/v0/status/1911912183149256943) with models from xai (Grok), FAL, Groq, and DeepInfra, including automatic API key setup and pay-as-you-go billing via Vercel Marketplace. They're offering a $10 credit for the Grok free tier.

  * Vercel shared insights on the [grep.app migration from CRA to Next.js](http://grep.app/), showcasing performance improvements. ([Source](https://x.com/rauchg/status/1911920410020757881)) I'm personally excited about this one – I rely heavily on examples when working with AI, and for me, a good example is often worth ten prompts. Tools like `grep.app` that make code discovery easier are invaluable.

* **Google's Growing Stack:**

  * Project IDX has officially become [Firebase Studio](https://x.com/_davideast/status/1909990728593453455), positioning itself as a cloud-based, agentic dev environment for full-stack AI apps, deeply integrated with Firebase. I've tried spinning up a few sites with it, and the speed is impressive. However, for more complex tasks like designing from images or intricate interactions, I still find myself leaning towards v0 for now.

  * Google quietly released the [Agent Development Kit (ADK)](https://x.com/omarsar0/status/1910004370864742757), a Python library (`pip install google-adk`) for building multi-agent systems with features like state management, tool usage, and orchestration. I haven't had a chance to dive into this yet, but it's right at the top of my list. Building robust agent systems is a huge area of interest, so this is probably the announcement I'm most excited about exploring this week.

  * Ramón Medrano Llamas shared his experience [moving back to VS Code from Cursor](https://x.com/rmedranollamas/status/1909516749612999149), highlighting the effectiveness of GitHub Copilot combined with the Gemini Code Assist extension (using Gemini 2.5 Pro in Agent Mode). I gave the Gemini Code Assist extension a try myself, but as someone deeply embedded in the Cursor workflow with established keyboard shortcuts and patterns, I struggled to find a flow I liked and didn't stick with it for long. It's interesting to see different perspectives, though!

  * AI features are rolling out more broadly in [Chrome](https://x.com/iam_chonchol/status/1909942954686636224), including text grabbing from YouTube videos and Google Lens integration.

* **Cloudflare Corner:**

  * Big news for edge compute: [Cloudflare Containers are coming to Open Beta in June](https://x.com/CherryJimbo/status/1910682562499850405), enabling running containerized apps (Next.js, Go, PHP confirmed) directly on the edge. This is huge news, in my opinion. Think about all the WordPress sites and other applications that rely on containerization. Opening this up on the edge unlocks incredible possibilities, including for AI applications. I'm super hyped to see what people build with this come June.

  * A new tool, [MCPify.ai](http://mcpify.ai/), launched for building MCP servers conversationally, built entirely on Cloudflare Workers and Durable Objects. ([Source](https://x.com/pbteja1998/status/1911723180445610149))

  * Securing MCP servers is getting easier, with examples shared using [WorkOS AuthKit](https://x.com/WorkOS/status/1910722639036874943) and [Auth0](https://x.com/dschenkelman/status/1910693265566728319).

## Cloudflare Developer Week: Agent & Platform Updates

Cursor's AI Agent has the abilitly to invoke MCP tools, but they lack direct access to your project. This lesson shows how to build custom MCP (Model Context Protocol) server tools that bridge this gap. Learn to define tool parameters using Zod schemas and the crucial `.describe()` method to explicitly request necessary context from the Cursor environment *before* your tool runs. See how the AI gathers this information (like Git status or version via terminal commands, or web search results) and passes it to your tool, enabling powerful, context-aware automation.

**Workflow demonstrated in this lesson:**

*   Scaffold a basic MCP server using a Cloudflare template (`pnpm create cloudflare`).
*   Run the MCP server locally and configure it in Cursor settings.
*   Define MCP tools (e.g., `status`) within the server code (`index.ts`).
*   Specify required context for tools using Zod schema parameters and `.describe()` (e.g., requesting "The status of the git repository").
*   Interact with the Cursor Agent using natural language (e.g., "Please check the status").
*   Observe the Agent's thought process: identifying the need for specific context based on the `.describe()` text.
*   See the Agent automatically using its *own* tools (like `run_terminal_cmd` or `web_search`) to gather the requested context *before* calling your MCP tool.

Each tab supports its own set of lower-case letter marks. Upper-case letter marks are shared across tabs allowing you to seamlessly move between a specific set of tabs regardless of how they are arranged.
